IlSogno Secondo is the 2nd restaurant that has been opened by Pedro Canelo. This restaurant is located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn and like it’s sister restaurant, Il Sogno, in Staten Island, this Brooklyn location is a pleasant and relaxing restaurant in which to dine. The restaurant has a conservative décor finished in dark wood trim and white linen-lined tables that are set with a candle and a bottle of red wine. No matter who you are, first time patron or frequent customer the staff at Il Sogno Secondo makes you feel welcome.
Food at Il Sogno Secondo is excellent. Meals start with a basket of warmed rustic Italian bread. Along with the bread basket diners are served a wholesome caponata, a Sicilian eggplant dish that is combined with large capers and olives.
Incredible things can happen with the appertizers at Il Sogno Secondo. The duo of Sicilian eggplant and zucchini flowers is outstanding. The fabulous breadcrumb-tomato-onion stuffed Sicilian eggplant coated with honey and the flowers stuffed with mascarpone cheese and spinach in a roasted red puree make for a great combination.
Fried Calamari is tender and served with a nice marinara dipping sauce. The grilled Octopus on a salad was nicely composed and one can see how it was cooked with care.
For the adventurous, try the Trippa Alla Sogno. Tender strips of beef triippe are served in a savory tomato sauce that makes this a delightful appetizer.
Il Sogno Secondo has perfected the art of cooking meat. Pork in particular, with temperatures that were consistently right on was outstanding — tender and cooked beautifully. To accompany a sensible, juicy grilled chop order some broccoli rabe along with some creamy whipped or roasted potatoes.
Other suggested meals included a squid ink risotto entree, breadcrumb-finished New Zealand lamb chops (both specials) and a really basic-sounding but winning Pollo Alla Tiffi — sautéed chicken breast stuffed with asparagus, roasted peppers and porcini mushrooms finished in a white wine and brown sauce that was distinct and finely done.
Desserts are house-made including a crepe that comes with a breathtaking fire show. Chocolate lava cake that was worth the indulgence and an apple combination tucked into perfectly puff pastry, served warm out of the oven that could not have been better.
With a litany of verbally spieled specials, it is difficult to choose but waiters can help with some really great suggestions so one could experience the food and enjoy a wonderful culinary experience.
Il Sogno Secondo in Park Slope is worthy of Manhattan style cuisine and pulls together a great dining experience. There are too many noteworthy dishes to mention so visit to the restaurant and explore their wonderful menu.
